Hobie sailing - Monterey clinic and race

I had expressed the desire to sail on hobie cats and Caitlin put me in touch with the local fleet - and so I find myself doing a two day clinic with a world champion and a 3 day event in Monterey.

Jim is my skipper  - as you can see the weather was definitely typical of Monterey - cold and foggy. The wind in general was light and very shifty which made for very tactical sailing.

A hobie 16 world champion came to do a clinic, sponsored by the fleet - he also raced in the event. In one race, we beat him!

This type of sights make me feel very sad - breaks my heart to see boats that no one is enjoying.

Love them tiller covers!

The fleet of hobie 16, 18 and 20s had an entire area of the beach rented out from the city of Monterey.

Caitlin and Rolf were also there to party

It takes a lot less time to put the boat on a trailer than Elise!

I think that the last time I sailed on a hobie cat I was about high school age - so these days brought back a lot of memories. During the day, if I closed my eyes, I could imagine being 15 again. At night, the bruises and sore muscles reminded me that it wasn't the case. The winds were a little too light to really enjoy the ride - if you are not on a trapeze, the boat feels sluggish. Downwind it is downright slow. There was one race where you could start feeling the power of this little devil as it came surging through the water and had both Jim and I crawl to the back of the boat.
